Emerging Artists: Access, Inclusion, Connection

Emerging Artists: Access, Inclusion, Connection is a development programme for early career movement artists who value accessibility and inclusivity. Funded by Arts Council Wales’ ‘Connect and Flourish’ scheme, this programme places anti-ableist actions and perspectives at the centre of developing the next generation of movement artists in Wales.

We will work with four early career artists (aged 18+) to collaboratively explore how access and inclusion can be integral to their movement practice. Each artist will develop their skills and knowledge through: 15 professional development workshops,  9 one-to-one mentoring sessions, advice sessions with a producer, support to create a ‘digital’ work-in-progress.

Stephanie Back, Krystal Dawn Campbell, Eädyth Crawford, Matthew Gough, Chris Ricketts, Ballet Cymru (Amy Doughty), and Kokoro Arts (Gundija Zandersona and Krystal S. Lowe).

We have chosen to use this specific terminology:

Deaf:

We use the term Deaf to refer to Deaf, deaf (deafened),  and Hard of hearing people as an inclusive community.

Black, Asian, and Non-Black people of colour:

Describing and defining ethnicities is complex, and looking from a global perspective ‘white’ is not the majority. We use the term Black, Asian, and Non-Black POC as a collective reference to a wide range of people marginalised due to their ethnicity.

Disabled:

We use the Social Model of Disability which positions attitudes and systems as disabling, not individual impairments. Not all disabilities are visible, so we will offer access riders to everyone we work with.
